The contract will task BT with the design and installation of the private network and will see the company lay more than 20 million metres of fibre optic cabling.

Data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps will be available to tenants of the MediaCityUK facility.

Mike Blackburn, BT's regional director for the north-west, said in a statement: "This partnership will provide one of the most advanced communications infrastructures of its kind, tailored to meet the specialist needs of the local media community, which demand higher bandwidth in order to thrive."

Meanwhile, BT has announced that next generation fibre optic broadband technology will change the way many companies use their IT infrastructure.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the company's managing director Bill Murphy said the major shift will be in the way companies access software.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19501565-ADNFCR
