Broadcom has altered the IEEE 802.1 Audio Video Bridging standard for the streaming of high definition audio and video data over Ethernet.
The new standard will encompass the transfer of data to a variety of networkable video and audio systems.
It has called the new standard BroadSync HD technology.
Commenting on the need for a new audio/video transmission standard for Ethernet, technical director of Broadcom's Enterprise Networking Group Michael Johas Teener said: "The connectivity technologies used today in consumer and professional audio/video electronics can be difficult to use with a plethora of seemingly identical connectors and obscure labels."
He added that current technologies were also blighted by performance and functionality issues and the inability to connect to computers or the internet.
The standard will allow for the connection of multiple speakers, cameras, video displays and computers over standard RJ45 leads.
Meanwhile, TSSI Systems has created a video door entry system that uses Cat5 cables and RJ45 connectors.
