Birmingham University deploys Foundry Networks Wi-Fi

Birmingham University deploys Foundry Networks Wi-FiThe University of Birmingham has installed Foundry Networks' IronPoint Mobility series of access points and controllers.

Foundry Networks is a leader in performance and total solutions for end-to-end switching and routing.

The university's deal with the company marks a significant overhaul of its Wi-Fi coverage as part of a major expansion programme to be completed by the end of the year.

It is said to be one of the largest deployments of Wi-Fi at a British university, with coverage to be rolled out at the university's 250-hectare Edgbaston campus and its 80-hectare Selly Oak campus.

John Turnbull, the University of Birmingham's head of networks in the IT Services department, said: "Our Wi-Fi strategy is to ensure staff, students and visitors to the university have the best experience of using our network in the whole of UK academia.

"Given our policy is not to allow open network access, this means straightforward registration and authentication with enough capacity to ensure fast and extensive coverage."
