Apple jumps on Xeon bandwagon - Networking Industry NewsApple is the latest company to offer the new Intel Xeon 5500 processors in its servers.

Yesterday (April 7th), Apple announced that the new processor will be offered in its next range of Xserve products, which will be mountable in server racks and server cabinets.

The new devices will sport two 2.93GHz processors and for UK customers the new technology will cost a minimum of £2,399 per unit.

For an additional cost, users can add up to 3TB of storage or a faster, more efficient solid-state hard drive.

Commenting on the optional solid-state technology, Apple worldwide vice president of Mac product marketing David Moody said: "With up to twice the performance, better power efficiency and an innovative SSD drive option, this is the best Xserve we’ve ever made."

According to Intel, the dedicated quad-core Xeon 5500 server processor, which provides memory access speeds of 25.6GB per second, will increase the number of businesses taking up cloud computing.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19115559-ADNFCR
