Alistair Darling outlines broadband tax - Networking Industry News

Alistair Darling outlines broadband tax - Networking Industry News Chancellor Alistair Darling has outlined the details of a broadband tax in his pre-budget report, which will have an effect on every person in the country leasing a phone line.

The £6-a-year levy will be invested in extending the existing broadband network as well as providing a boost to the introduction of fibre optic lead-based data networking technology.

"We now want to go further, so we can provide the next generation of super-fast broadband to 90 per cent of the population by the end of 2017," explained Darling.

"This will be funded through a duty of 50p a month on landlines which will be included in the finance bill," he added.

According to moneysupermarket.com's Julie Owens, 50p per month is a small price to pay to help with the rollout of superfast broadband.

However, she added that the tax was a little unfair on people with a phone line but no broadband contract.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19505698-ADNFCR
