The UK government has announced plans to invest £1 billion in upgrading Britain's broadband infrastructure.
Following on from the publication of a recent report which warned that just 70 per cent of the population would be able to enjoy faster broadband speeds should the necessary infrastructure improvements be funded by private finance alone, the business secretary Peter Mandelson has unveiled the new Next Generation Fund.
Through the new fund, work will be carried out to increase connection speeds to as much as 50Mbps in a bid to ensure the UK is able to keep pace with the world's top digital economies.
"This investment is about bringing the future of broadband to areas of the country that would otherwise miss out," he said.
"We cannot underestimate the opportunities this will bring for homes and businesses which is why we are taking action to make sure everyone benefits."
At the same time, plans to ensure that every community in the UK enjoys broadband connection speeds of at least 2Mbps in time for the London 2012 Olympics have also been revealed by the government.
