10Gbit networking could cause RJ45 revival - Networking Industry News

10Gbit networking could cause RJ45 revival - Networking Industry News The 10GBASE-T standard for 10Gbit networking will be adopted as standard for switches and servers for the same reasons the RJ45 cable became an industry standard, it has been claimed.

Governing cabling standards for 10Gbit transmission over either shielded or unshielded twisted-pair cables using RJ45connectors, the IEEE cabling standard is used by network equipment manufacturers around the globe.

"As 10GBASE-T further matures, its traditional Ethernet attributes of low cost, ease of use, and flexibility become very compelling in the adoption decision," Bill Woodruff, co-founder of Aquantia, a network equipment manufacturer.

He added that the RJ45 connector is currently the dominant Ethernet connector type and is likely to dominate in the future.

Mr Woodruff claimed that while SPF+ is a viable alternative to RJ45 in some situations it relies entirely on fibre optic leads making it less cost effective.

Cabling manufacturer Siemon has recently unveiled a new range of fibre optic cables which can transmit data at between 40 and 100Gbit.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19158302-ADNFCR
