Switches to integrate 40 GbE technology - Network Accessories

Switches to integrate 40 GbE technology - Network AccessoriesForce10 Networks has announced that it plans to incorporate 40 gigabit ethernet (GbE) technology into its switches, catering to demands for increased bandwidth and the need for greater transmission rates.

The company believes that the IEEE will ratify the new rates later this year and insists 40 GbE is a better option than 100 GbE because it is more cost effective.

Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst for carrier and data centre networks at Infonetics Research, explained why the step up was so vital for technology in switches.

He said: "The unstoppable crush of data is causing scaling problems in data centres that are today confined to ten GbE networks. Even though 100 GbE is desired, data centre owners are looking for practical relief offered in the lower-cost 40 GbE.

"100 GbE makes sense at some point as the technology becomes more cost effective, but customers want solutions to simplify their data centre networks and drive down costs today."

The ten GbE standard was originally established in 2002 to provide faster networking solutions.
