Security worries means boost for firewall industry - Network AccessoriesA new report has demonstrated how, with more threats and technologies triggering innovation, the firewall market may be on the way up.

According to the study by Frost & Sullivan, developments such as VoIP, virtualisation and cloud computing have opened up new security threats.

This has meant security companies are having to offer new solutions and network equipment, and it has been estimated by the organisation that revenues in the industry will grow from $2.95 billion in 2009 to $4.63 billion in 2016.

Chris Rodriguez, a research analyst at Frost & Sullivan, said: "The firewall's ability to define and defend a network perimeter has earned itself a reputation as an indispensable security product.

"While this reputation has helped the market grow in the past, participants must step up efforts to innovate to ensure growth levels resume their upward trajectory."

One of the challenges facing the industry, according to the report, is convincing customers to upgrade their systems if they already have a firewall in place.

Meanwhile, HP recently introduced the TippingPoint Secure Virtualization Framework, a new security solution for physical and virtual environments.
