New server room monitoring practices could be on the way in the US after a leading organisation recommended new energy efficiency measures.
The Green Grid has confirmed that the power usage effectiveness (PUE) metric has received approval, with the categories for measurement outlined.
PUE metrics work by comparing the amount of energy consumed by the data centre to the total amount of energy consumed by the IT equipment.
Dan Azevedo, Symantec representative and board member of The Green Grid, commented: "“Driving industry alignment of PUE through consistent measurement and reporting processes represents a significant step in improving data centre energy efficiency.
"The guidance specific to calculating PUE for data centres that use multiple energy sources (electric, natural gas, water, etc.) is substantial to ensuring PUE is measured and reported equitably. This task force is working to drive clear, consistent recommendations with a single voice."
Effiecient cooling methods, such as cold aisles, can help to improve energy efficiency within data centres and server rooms.
