Transportation and military applications are considered to be among the biggest beneficiaries of a new ethernet switch being introduced by GarrettCom Europe.
The company has extended its 6K range of ethernet switches with the new 6KM appliance, which features M12 heavy-duty port connectors instead of the more-typical RJ45 offerings.
This helps ensure they remain more rugged and can withstand shock and vibration, making them an ideal choice for the networking needs of passengers in military vehicles, train carriages and emergency vehicles.
Other features of the base unit include four 10/100 M12 copper ports, with optional Power over Ethernet, while it can additionally be configured to add two Gigabit ports.
GarrettCom Europe sales and marketing manager David Moss said: "Vibration is a real problem in mobile networking applications, and the standard RJ45 port on networking equipment has long been recognised as a weak link.
"The M12 connectors are a much more robust solution, and with the 6KM we've combined this added security with the typical 6K-style configuration flexibility and compact form factor."
Earlier this year, Marvell Semiconductor launched ethernet switch platforms to help small businesses keep their power consumption and costs low.
