More companies will be using unified communications (UC) technology in 2011, an expert has predicted.
This may come as news to businesses using network kits to streamline their IT practices.
Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst of enterprise networks and video at Infonetics Research, commented that while UC has been on the market for a while, most users "have yet to experience" the technology.
UC platforms such as Microsoft Lync 2010 can significantly improve businesses' flexibility, he believes.
"It increases the portability of communication tools that are already used, for example on new devices and new locations [and] it gives them completely new tools such as desktop sharing, which are useful for distributed teams," Mr Machowinski pointed out.
IT departments could also turn towards cloud computing techniques, although this area of technology needs more work to "smooth out demand spikes", he said, particularly in places such as the "seamless expansion of private clouds through public clouds".
