The plans by BT to launch super-fast broadband will not be affected by the economic downturn, according to the firm.
In July, the communications provider announced it was upgrading its network cables to bring new fibre optic broadband to over ten million homes across the UK by 2012, in a £1.5 billion move.
Now a BT spokesman has told silicon.com the firm remains in discussions with industry regulator Ofcom about ensuring it could make a return on the large investment.
The spokesman added that he could not guarantee the project would be "completely unaffected by the recession".
He did confirm: "The project isn't at risk because of the recession.
"There's nothing that is affecting that investment decision at this moment."
It was recently reported that the Shetland Islands council is battling with BT to ensure it is not overlooked when the high speed broadband is laid.
The Shetland News reports that council has accused BT of being biased for withholding network upgrades to the island.
