Power over Ethernet is experiencing growth despite a wider IT industry downturn, it has been claimed.
According to eetimes.com, a large number of new suppliers are entering the market to capitalise on the success of the technology.
Steve Ohr, an analyst and industry expert at Gartner, said: "With power over Ethernet, IP telephones can plug into a RJ45 Ethernet jack, which provides power for the phone as well as two-way data communication with the Ethernet host."
"Modifications to the IEEE 802.3af/at specification have enabled even-higher-powered devices (PDs) to derive their power from the Ethernet port," he added.
Meanwhile, Juniper Networks has just unveiled a 100Gbit Ethernet adapter, which it claims is the first of its kind in the industry.
However, the adapter is unlikely to be released to the public before the end of the year as official standards for 100Gbit data transfer have not been finalised and will not be ratified until 2010.
