The first worldwide WiMax Rev-e network in the 3.5 Gigahertz Spectrum has been launched.
The network has been launched by broadband wireless access provider OneMax, which also offers multimedia and VoIP services to the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent.
Raoul Fontanez, CEO of OneMax, said the company was going to "open the door" to the new idea of a Mediacom provider offering internet, telephony and new communication services.
Olivier Picard, president of Alcatel-Lucent's Europe and south region, said: "As the first operator to commercially introduce WiMax Rev-e services, OneMax is truly a world pioneer and we are gratified to play such an important role in enabling them to develop the wireless broadband market in the Dominican Republic."
He added that the solution will enable visitors and subscribers to enjoy "fast, reliable connections" to the internet in fixed environments, as well as nomadic ones.
Mr Picardalso said that it was effective in areas which have little or no DSL coverage.
