Microsoft ships new version of IIS web server - Network Supplies

Microsoft ships new version of IIS web server - Network Supplies Business IT purchasers looking for network supplies might have heard that Microsoft has this week started shipping Internet Information Services (IIS) Express 7.5 for free.

The new version of its IIS web server allows developers to test web applications on Windows by combining lightweight web server capabilities with IIS 7.5 strengths, TechWorld reports.

"We think IIS Express combines the ease of use of the ASP.Net Web Server (aka Cassini) currently built-into Visual Studio today with the full power of IIS," commented Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president in the Microsoft Developer Division.

A free, embedded database engine named SQL Server Compact Edition 4 also arrived this week, designed to run in-memory inside an ASP.Net application.

"SQL CE does not require you to run a setup or install a database server in order to use it. You can simply copy the SQL CE binaries into the \bin directory of your ASP.Net application, and then your web application can use it as a database engine," Mr Guthrie added to the news source.
