Data security breaches 'on the rise' Organisations should protect their infrastructure from data breaches, a technology expert has said.

Amichai Shulman, chief technology officer at IT firm Imperva, said that companies need to add more controls to their infrastructure to prevent data security problems.

He added that data breaches are on the rise across UK companies due to more mature network controls.

"We have more mature infrastructure controls today so attackers are aiming directly at the data layer," Mr Shulman explained.

"This is what an attacker is looking for - the data that relates to the business, personal data, commercial data, intellectual property and so on."

A recent report from Imperva revealed that malicious intentions are the main factor behind 62 per cent of data breaches.

One in three breaches is caused by insider and hackers contribute to 29 per cent of such incidents, the survey found.

The study also showed that two-thirds of companies did not know whether they had experienced data breaches.
