Microsoft has announced that updates for will soon be made available for Windows Server 2008 R2.
The company has confirmed that the public beta of Service Pack 1 (SP1) will be available for download at the end of July to both Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 users.
Among the new features is 'dynamic memory', which enables users to pool of all the memory available on a physical host and distribute it to virtual machines running on that host.
Furthermore, 'RemoteFX' will help to deliver a better desktop virtualisation experience on a wide range of target devices.
Oliver Rist, senior product manager for Windows Server Marketing, said that the release was part of "building on our commitment to provide customers with the right technologies to virtualise their IT environments".
He added: "We've posted on the contents of SP1 before, but the beta release will be the first time you'll be able to actually get your mitts on the new code."
A Microsoft chief recently suggested that the future of data centres could be in modular units spread across fields rather than 'monolithic' structures.
