Microsoft trials new data centre processors - Network Accessories Microsoft has started trialling netbook processors in its data centres in a bid to cut costs.

According to Jim Larus, director of software architecture for data centre futures at Microsoft's Research Group, a netbook processor uses between one-fifth and one-tenth of the energy of a typical server processor and offers one third of the performance.

Despite needing three times as many netbook chips to get the same number-crunching power, the amount of energy consumed by a data centre running off these low-power processors would still be less.

Larus claimed that server cabinets housing netbook processors do not need the large fans and specialist cooling equipment needed in standard data centres.

He demonstrated a server rack containing 50 netbook processors which could be run from a standard power socket.

In related news, Cisco is set to launch a new range of built-from-scratch data centre hardware which it is comparing to the iPhone.
