A new study has raised the prospect that businesses will decrease the proportion of IT budgets they spend on security.
The research by Gartner has showed that, while six per cent of budgets went on security in 2009, by 2011 it will stand at three, although this does not indicate that safety will be compromised.
Measures to protect server racks and networking equipment includes next-generation firewalls, e-mail security gateways and identity and access management.
Vic Wheatman, research director at Gartner, gave businesses some advice on assessing their security needs.
He said: "Determining how much a specific enterprise spends on information security is not an easy exercise, particularly during time of economic uncertainty.
"However, regardless of industry or geography, we would urge organisations to use their best efforts to evaluate enterprise spending, while recognising that they may not be capturing all security spending because of organisationally diffused security budgets."
IT expert Manek Dubash recently suggested that guardhouses and biometric authentication are among the ways to protect data centres from security breaches.
