Despite the pressures of the economic downturn, businesses still see IT as a crucial area of expenditure, according to one expert.
Gerry McLaughlin from the online portal ITContractor.com said businesses see IT very differently today than they did during the last recession.
"A sea change has happened in the IT sector," he explained.
""In previous downturns IT was seen as a cost and, as with the marketing budget, it was easy to cut.
"However, this time round IT was seen as both a cost-cutting enabler and as too crucial to the business."
Indeed, he claimed that today businesses are using IT as a way to steal a match on their competitors.
He made his comments after a review of the IT labour market by e-skills UK showed that there was a rise in spending on IT in the first quarter of the year.
New servers, server racks, structured cabling and network tools could be among the hardware products that companies are investing in.
