There are a number of things network equipment buyers should consider when choosing KVM over IP switches, according to one expert.
In an article for Windows IT Pro, Jason Bovberg said KVM switches can differ substantially in terms of functionality.
It is therefore important to list the features required and do some thorough research to avoid wasting resources.
"The solution you choose needs to be able to support every OS platform and network device in your environment," he explained.
One of the questions buyers should ask themselves is how many ports they need on the switch, taking into account future growth and requirements.
"Switches differ wildly in the number of computers that can connect to it, and in enterprise scenarios, you can daisy chain switches to cover greater numbers of connections," Mr Bovberg remarked.
Buyers should also check maximum video resolution and sound capabilities, the form factor of the switch and whether it is server rack mountable and the type of network cables they will need for server connections.
