HP looks to alternative data centre power - Network Accessories

HP looks to alternative data centre power - Network AccessoriesHP has claimed that manure could be used in the future to power data centres through the methane it produces.

According to researchers at the company, 10,000 cows could power a one-megawatt data centre through the 20,000 tonnes of manure they produce each year.

The firm believes this could be used to create self-sustaining data centres, although HP has accepted that other energy sources will not be replaced by this technology.

Chandrakant Patel, a researcher at HP Labs working on the project, told CNET: "These farms already exist. Some already use the methane and (distribute) it elsewhere for local use.

"We are suggesting that if you are starting to (look for a place to locate) a data centre, now that high-speed networking is starting to extend into other areas, why not look at this opportunity where you cannot only use manure, but capture the energy right at the source?"

Because of their high power consumption, partly to keep them cool, data centres have been the topic of much discussion about energy efficiency.

One suggestion has been to use fuel cell technology, while Google has even suggested building offshore data centres that harness the power of the waves.
