Data storage equipment manufacturer Hitachi has just shipped the industry's first 2TB hard disc drives that run at 7,200rpm.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies fourth-generation hard drives, which are the first to be rolled out under the company's enterprise-class name, are designed for mission critical use in facilities such as data centres.
The devices have a mean time between failure (MTBF) of 1.2 million hours, making them both high-capacity and reliable.
Hitachi claims that the devices are ideal for data warehousing, disk-to-disk backup and cloud computing applications and can be used in server rack mounted storage units to boost existing capacity.
Earlier this year, Netgear announced it was soon to launch a 24TB network attached storage device aimed at small and medium-sized firms.
The ReadyNAS 3200, which is a 2U server cabinet mountable device, has room for 12 hard drives.
Compatible with both Gigabit Ethernet and Iscsi, the ReadyNAS 3200 is suitable for backup purposes as well as database applications.
