Verizon launches live traffic on 40 Gbps circuits

Verizon launches live traffic on 40 Gbps circuitsAdvanced communications and information technology solutions provider Verizon Business has quadrupled the standard speed on its backbone network circuits which connect major US cities.

Using Juniper Networks high-performance T-series core routers, it has deployed a router-to-router 40 Gbps circuit which carries live traffic.

These interconnections between backbone routers carry production internet traffic between Washington DC and Chicago, while also carrying production voice, data and video traffic on Verizon's multi protocol label switching network between Washington and New York.

It also plans to deploy further 40 Gbps transmission spans and circuits on its domestic network in the US.

Fred Briggs, executive vice president of network operations and technology for Verizon Business, said: "Moving from ten Gbps to 40 Gbps demonstrates Verizon Business'commitment to meet our customer needs and invest in state-of-the art technology that takes our backbone infrastructure to the next level.

"Aggregating IP traffic onto one 40 Gbps wavelength means not only higher traffic throughput, but lower latency and reduced jitter, which translates into enhanced performance and responsiveness for Verizon Business customers."
