An expert has pointed out some of the considerations that should be made when looking at ethernet cable installation in an industrial environment.
Writing for InTech, John Rinaldi, an industrial networking expert, said that it is possible that a worker could accidentally damage equipment while temperatures can also fluctuate from extreme highs to lows.
It is also pointed out that chemicals could pose a threat to cables while electromagnetic noise and vibrations could also distort data transfers.
He adds: "A light-duty industrial ethernet cable may have slightly higher quality jacketing than office ethernet cable. The cable may even be an office ethernet cable if the conditions do not require extra protection.
"As you rise to heavy-duty cable, though, the jacket and metals improve. Heavy-duty cable is more expensive than light-duty cable, so it is only used when necessary."
On the issue of connectors, Rinaldi says that sealed connectors may the best option instead of the standard snap-on varieties used in the office.
Amphenol recently released a range of explosion-proof connectors that are particularly suited to hazardous environments.
