Cisco looking to dominate networking - Networking Acessories

Cisco looking to dominate networking - Networking AcessoriesA technology expert has claimed that, with its latest product releases, Cisco appears to be trying to extend its reach into data centre infrastructure.

Traditionally, the company has been known as a provider of networking solutions and, more recently, virtualisation.

However, according to Jim Duffy, writing for Computerworld the release of products such as the Nexus 5000 switches and the new blade and rack server shows other ambitions.

Jonathan Eunice of Illuminata told the website: "The targeting is the big news. Cisco got into the server business with very narrow targeting: [chief executive John] Chambers said, we're not really after the server business, we're after the virtualisation business.

"This announcement changes that. [Cisco is] going after any workload, virtual or non-virtual. The specificity is gone."

As Duffy points out, extending its reach will mean the company also finds itself in more direct competition with rivals such as Dell and IBM.

When announcing the Catalyst switches recently, the firm said it was looking to provide the infrastructure for the "new internet".
