Cisco has announced its first Connected Grid offerings, aiming to deliver Smart Grid communications solutions to improve reliability and efficiency within generation facilities.
The Cisco 2520 Connected Grid Switch is one of the products from the range, built for the most demanding utility substation environments, to extend network-based security and management policies to substations.
All the switches and routers in the line promise comprehensive cyber security solution, while also meet or exceed all IEEE standards.
Laura Ipsen, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco Smart Grid, said: "Cisco's vision is to help utilities transform energy production, distribution and consumption using an end-to-end, IP-based communications infrastructure to more sustainably meet the world's future energy needs.
"Our Connected Grid portfolio represents the foundation of this innovative energy platform that will improve the electrical grid's efficiency and create exciting opportunities for utilities, as well as new consumer energy services."
It was recently announced that Cisco's Eos platform will be used by the organisers of London 2012 to build and support community-driven websites.
