Businesses are being urged to go for greener switches and network accessories in order to help meet government targets.
A survey by Morse has found that 65 per cent of UK businesses are not prepared to comply with the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme and associated feed-in tariffs.
However, 72 per cent did say that making their IT operations more environmentally friendly was a top priority.
Andrew Mulholland, marketing manager at networking solutions company D-Link Europe, explained why making switches greener is so important.
"Network infrastructure is an incredibly wasteful thing - network switches alone often use around 50 per cent more electricity than is actually required.
"So anything that can be done to reduce the energy consumption of the switch has an obvious benefit in terms of cost-saving and reducing power usage."
Mr Mulholland also pointed out that network supplies with less heat dissipation could be beneficial because the components within them will last longer.
