BT will use fibre cables to deliver super-fast broadband to thousands more Scottish households and businesses over the next year, it has been reported.The firm is aiming to bring super-fast fibre broadband to a further 124,000 homes by spring 2013, with Bo'ness, Brechin, Dumbarton, Elgin, Fochabers, Lockerbie, Scone and Tillicoultry among the towns to benefit.
This will mean around two-thirds of Scottish citizens will have access to fibre broadband services by this time next year.
Alex Neil, cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, said the latest announcement from BT was "very much welcomed" by the Scottish Government.
"Broadband is a vital part of the essential infrastructure of Scotland and faster broadband for businesses and households will play a key role in Scotland’s future success," he stated.
BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said the rapid rollout of broadband network cables offers "a great opportunity" for the country.
"It is an important part of BT's plans to help ensure that the nation is able to take full advantage of the communications revolution," he added.
