A new set of guidelines to protect customers has been issued to internet service providers (ISPs) by the Committee of Advertising Practice.
The guidelines come six months after a study by Ofcom revealed that the average download speeds achieved in the UK were less than half of the advertised "up to" speeds advertised.
Under the new guidance, companies are expected to prove that at least ten per cent of their customers can achieve the advertised speeds, whether it is through fibre cables or copper ones.
Secretary of CAP Shahriar Coupal commented: "The industry has put a lot of work into producing this guidance which significantly tightens the position on how these products and services may be advertised."
The expert added that CAP hoped marketers would carefully study the help notes and ensure their future campaigns adhere to the guidelines about advertising the speeds people can attain through ethernet cables.
Earlier this month, Kevin Baughan, director of technical strategy at Virgin Media told IPTV News that his firm's commitment to rolling out fast fibre cable connections in the UK inspired other ISPs to follow suit.
