Cloud computing has been identified as an effective way for firms using ethernet cables to connect to the internet to reduce their carbon footprint.
Stuart Hibbert, chief executive of icomplete.com, asserted that the majority of servers only achieve about 15 per cent utilisation.
He explained that cloud computing improves efficiency and may cut down the power and resources needed to run the services as there will be less computers running infrastructure.
"So, by switching to cloud infrastructure, you're basically using shared resources," he stated.
Mr Hibbert noted that those who are online at home may not have to come into work every day in order to be productive, something that will further reduce the carbon footprint of their employer.
This comes after a survey conducted by Verdantix for the Carbon Disclosure Project suggested that large firms switching to cloud computing solutions could save a combined total of $12.3 billion (£7.5 billion) each year by 2020.
