Companies using fibre optic patch leads could be among those turning towards adoption of cloud computing.
According to a survey from IDC, global spending on the technology is set to grow to $44.2 billion (£27.7 billion) in the next two years, almost three times as much as today.
Separate research by IBM revealed that medium-sized firms are hoping to invest in cloud computing, with two-thirds of those questioned saying that they are either planning or currently deploying cloud-based measures in a bid to improve IT systems management and reduce costs.
Rosalyn Donnelly, IT manager at Ireland-based C & D Foods, explained to IBM her reasons for moving to the cloud.
She said the company needed a fast and cheap way to move staff off Microsoft Exchange.
"We decided to move employees to the cloud with LotusLive iNotes. With its simple administration tools and user-friendly interface, LotusLive helped take pressure off our migration team," she said.
"We were able to move users quickly and easily without any interruption to our network or IT infrastructure."
