10Gbps copper cabling is on its way to the masses, but Techworld writer Bryan Betts is unsure whether the new technology will be able to compete with fibre optic leads.
He claimed that while 10Gbps copper cables are getting cheaper and consume far less power than they used to, they may never fully replace fibre cables.
"Most 10Gbps shipments to date have been optical fibre," Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at the Linley Group, told Techworld.
"We think in 2007 the market was about 700,000 switch ports, and this year will be something in the order of 1.2 to 1.3 million," he added,
However, industry experts believe that high taxes are hindering the roll-out of next generation fibre optic broadband in the UK.
According to Computer Weekly, the creation of a new networking infrastructure that would dramatically boost broadband speeds is being held back by political issues and not technical limitations.
