New network cables will be needed across Cambridgeshire as part of plans for a rollout of broadband across the county.
The Cambridge News reports that some £70 million of public and private financing will be used to deliver 25Mbps broadband to at least 90 per cent of premises across Cambridgeshire.
It is expected that the county council, which approves the scheme, will put forward approximately £20 million of the funding.
Nick Clarke, leader of Cambridge County Council, told the newspaper: "Superfast broadband is taken as the norm in many countries now and if we wish to compete not with Durham, Cornwall and Wales, if we want to compete on the world stage, it's essential.
"We wouldn’t expect communities and businesses to start up without electricity or roads or water."
Meanwhile, plans to rollout fibre cable broadband services in Northern Ireland are well underway, with BT having invested £30 million over the past 18 months in the country's infrastructure as part of its Next Generation Broadband Project.
So far, 166 exchanges have been upgraded.
