A new study has established how the UK and US are lagging behind other countries in broadband speeds.
According to research by Strategy Analytics, the US ranks 23rd in terms of speed, one place below the UK and well behind the likes of Singapore, Japan and South Korea.
The poor placings would suggest that there may not be enough fibre cables being used to supply broadband services.
Ben Piper, director of the Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics service and author of the report, explained how a new method of measurement, taking into account household penetration, speed, affordability, value for money and urbanicity, was used to produce the rankings.
"The traditional single metric approach of looking at broadband is becoming less relevant," he said.
"We feel confident that our multifactor index is a superior indicator of a country's relative broadband advancement."
With the growing importance of cloud computing, faster broadband speeds are essential to businesses wishing to access their services.
