General Cable has introduced a range of halogen-free cables that promise to be green.
Part of the GenSPEED product line, the cables, called 17 Free because halogen is number 17 on the periodic table, are also free of chlorine, fluorine, bromine and iodine, making them more environmentally-friendly.
The Cat6 and Cat5e cables were created after the company identified areas where it can become greener.
Scott Brown, director of technical services at General Cable, said: "I believe this proactive initiative reflects our stewardship to produce more environmentally sustainable products without compromising our high standards of safety and performance."
Based in Kentucky, General Cable produces copper and fibre optic cabling solutions for a range of industries including communications and mining.
An analyst from Frost & Sullivan said last year that data centres were looking to become greener, especially as the recession wore on, with the lowering of cooling costs a priority.
The company pointed out that virtualization is a way of going green as it reduces the number of servers needed in a data centre.
