Firecomms' OptoLock interconnect planned for set top boxes

Firecomms' OptoLock interconnect planned for set top boxesCabling solutions manufacturer Firecomms has had its OptoLock RC-LED transceiver included in STMicroelectronics' reference design for an IPTV set top box.

The interconnect, which is a low-cost housing for the instant termination of bare Plastic Optical Fibre (POF), will be included in the STi7105 and will make the device easier to connect to a home network.

Hugh Hennessy, Firecomms' vice-president of sales and marketing, said that the inclusion of the device points to the importance that POF plays in home networking equipment.

Mr Hennessy added that more and more people are making use of POF in home networking and the RC-LED transceiver will push do-it-yourself networking one step closer to the mainstream.

The OptoLock is ideal for 100MB Ethernet applications and allows fibre optic cabling to be cut to length on site making cabling installations easier.

Meanwhile, the Welsh Assembly has announced it is to extend its fibre optic network to Dwyfor, according to the Daily Post.ADNFCR-1186-ID-18939793-ADNFCR
