Virgin Media has reported an increase of theft of its cables as opportunistic thieves seek to cash in on the high price of copper.
Leeds has been particularly affected, with thousands of customers suffering outages after three cases in less than a fortnight.
While they are after traditional copper line, it is in fact fibre cables they have been pulling up, something that would not be particularly valuable for them to sell on.
A spokesperson for the company said: "We take incidents like this extremely seriously. The police have attended the scene, our internal security teams have been notified and a full investigation is currently under way."
The network cables are crucial to providing superfast broadband services around the country, and, over the next few years, it is expected that fibre cables will gradually replace those of the copper variety.
The price of copper has almost doubled in the past year, meaning it is proving to be an attractive target for criminals, who then melt down the metal.
