The growth of mobile internet is unlikely to render broadband cables obsolete, one expert has insisted.
Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice magazine, said that regardless of how popular mobile internet becomes, there will also be a need for fixed-line connections.
"You'll still want a fixed broadband connections for large downloads and video or music streaming," she explained.
Indeed, as demand for super-fast services grows, businesses and consumers may be looking to fibre optic cabling to deliver the services they need.
Ms Stokes made her comments after figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that 31 per cent of internet users now log on via a mobile phone compared to just 23 per cent last year.
She said she expects the trend for mobile internet to continuing growing in the months and years ahead as prices fall and technology becomes more advanced.
But she predicted that mobile will act as a complement to fixed-line connections, not a replacement.
