London's Victorian sewer system could be the answer to the City's next-generation broadband problems, it has been claimed.
According to the Caio review, which looked into barriers preventing the UK from installing fast fibre-optic broadband cabling, the London sewerage system could be a good place to install the technology.
It suggested that using the capitals sewers could greatly reduce the cost of civil engineering as less roads would need to be dug up.
The underground effluence tunnels are already used to house traditional copper cabling and data conduits.
Commenting on the effect of the credit crunch on next-generation broadband investment, Ed Richards, chief executive of Ofcom, told the Times: "I will make no bones about it, this is going to be a difficult and challenging time for people to make big investments of that kind."
"We are acutely aware of that, but also need to take a long-term view," he added.
