A number of companies which have made the switch to wireless networking have found that more and more of their wired Ethernet ports are going unused.
Network World claims that the prevalence of Wi-Fi is putting pressure on businesses to drop wired solutions altogether.
However, the solution opted for is entirely dependent on what is required and many believe that even the latest Wi-Fi standard is not up to mission critical applications, the news provider states.
An anonymous chief technical officer told the tech-news website: "If you talk about 24/7 applications and critical access, everything from security to guaranteed access in a power outage... we're still building robust wired networks for that."
He added that Wi-Fi does present the industry with a significant change in culture and noted that many students are clueless as to what to do with patch cables because they "grew up with wireless".
According to Stuff's Dave Thompson, wireless networks can pose security issues to both users and businesses.
