Government confirms fibre optic rollout plans - Network Cables

Government confirms fibre optic rollout plans - Network CablesThe government has reemphasised its commitment to rolling out fibre optic broadband services to the entire country by 2020.

In a speech today (March 22nd), Gordon Brown said that providing superfast broadband to businesses and homes would be essential in preventing a digital divide.

The prime minister added: "Faster broadband speeds will bring new, cheaper, more personalised and more effective public services to people; it will bring games and entertainment options with new levels of sophistication; it will make accessing goods and services immeasurably easier; it will enrich our democracy by giving people new ways of communicating complaining and challenging vested interests."

The issue of extending the reach of fibre cable networks has been a hot political issue recently with both main parties coming up with separate plans on funding.

While Labour wants to implement a 50p per month landline tax to pay for it, the Conservatives are in favour of getting businesses within the telecommunications industry to drive forward the rollout of fast services.

Alternatively, the party would take money from the licence fee that is currently being used in the digital switchover.
