Yorkshire fibre optic initiative has been vindicated - Fibre Leads

Yorkshire fibre optic initiative has been vindicated - Fibre Leads A Yorkshire fibre optic initiative has been vindicated by the change in national policy, it has been claimed.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Yorkshire Forward's assistant business manager Jim Farmery said: "We got involved because we believe very strongly that broadband has a strong economic effect."

"I think our work has been somewhat vindicated – national policy is now reflecting the importance we placed on broadband," he added.

He claimed that the people of Yorkshire could not rely on private businesses to upgrade Yorkshire's broadband infrastructure with fibre optic leads as companies would only go where there was a guaranteed market.

In 2005, council chiefs from Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham joined forces with Yorkshire Forward to create a private company that would ensure Yorkshire was not left behind when it came to next-generation broadband.

Earlier this year, Yorkshire Forward said the consortium had attracted £90 million worth of funding for the project.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19450274-ADNFCR
