Western Digital has launched new device that allows internet users to create reliable high-speed networks in their home using their existing wiring.
The Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit turns electrical wires into network cables using four network ports that can connect up to seven devices and one router.
This means users can bring together computers, televisions and games consoles to stream high-definition video, transfer and download files or play multi-player online games without running network cables throughout their home.
Setting up a home network using the kit is "as easy as plugging in a lamp" and there is no new wiring required.
Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing at Western Digital's branded products group, said that wireless networks do not always deliver the reliable connections and high speeds needed to cope with high definition video streaming and gaming.
"Meanwhile, drilling holes for new Ethernet cables is complicated, expensive and messy," he added.
"With the Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit, it's truly easy to enjoy all the HD streaming and broadband internet capabilities of these great new devices anywhere there is an electrical outlet."
The device complements Western Digital's WD TV line of media players, which include the WD TV Mini and the WD TV Live Plus.
