Internet service provider Virgin Media is set to expand its cabling network in the UK.
The company will connect a further 500,000 homes to its network equipment in the next few years marking the most significant network roll-out since the 1990s.
According to the firm, it hopes to generate a significant amount of revenue from the expansion by carrying out the relatively inexpensive infrastructure upgrade.
By the end of 2009 the company expects to have connected 50,000 new homes and businesses to its network.
It is believed that the latest expansion of Virgin Media's ISP service will see cabling placed in existing ducts to ensure costs are kept to a minimum.
Meanwhile, at the start of the month the firm started testing a 200Mbit network service in 100 houses in Ashford, Kent.
The high-speed broadband, which Virgin Media claims is the fastest in the UK, uses fibre optic leads to transmit data
