Virgin Media increases network speed

Virgin Media increases network speedVirgin Media has announced that customers on its 'L' broadband package are to enjoy faster speeds.

The free upgrade from 4 Mbps to 10 Mbps will begin in February and will be rolled out gradually across the country.

Thanks to Virgin Media's fibre-optic cabling - as opposed to the more conventional copper - around nine million homes could be taking advantage of 50 Mbps connection speeds by the end of the year.

Acting chief executive Neil Berkett said: "Virgin Media's cable network gives us a natural superiority over other broadband services.

"We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with our cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband."

The ten Mbps service should let customers download a typical music track in four seconds, according to the company.

A recent study by Computeractive magazine revealed that 62 per cent of PC users say they routinely enjoyed less than half the speed advertised by service providers.
