XO Communications has revealed the University of Memphis has adopted its gigabit network cables to expand internet connectivity for students and staff.
The agreement sees the learning institution supplied with high-speed connectivity directly to its campus through its 500-route mile metro fibre network across Memphis.
According to the company, its solution provides users with high-bandwidth access over ethernet, delivering data transfer rates of up to one gigabit per second and scalable and redundant connectivity.
Mark Reavis, director of network services at the University of Memphis, said the growing importance of the internet as a tool for communicating has meant the organisation had to act.
"The increased usage of the internet for communications and research has put higher demands on our networking infrastructure. XO's internet service has proven to be very reliable and very robust," he stated.
XO Communications claims to provide Voice over Internet Protocol and network transport to businesses, governments, carriers and wholesale customers.
The firm claims to have approximately one million miles of metro fibre.
