Britain is not the only European country falling behind in terms of fibre optic broadband infrastructure, it has been claimed.
According to one industry expert, other countries have lower than expected fibre optic broadband take up.
However, Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie, has claimed that the shortfall in fibre optic broadband technology should not be a cause for concern.
His comments followed research by Strategy Analytics that showed Britain was not in the top ten countries for fibre optic broadband implementation.
Mr Marling said: "I don't see this being a problem at the moment. Virgin Media offers 50Mb broadband that you would be hard pushed to come close to using for anything meaningful.
"They are looking into all kinds of uses for the extra bandwidth, but short of downloading films in five minutes, the technology will continue to outweigh its uses for a considerable time to come."
However, new research conducted by ISPreview.co.uk revealed that 60 per cent of consumers want internet service providers to boost their broadband speeds.
