UK compares favourably to other countries on broadband - Network CablesAs companies begin investing in fibre cables to deliver super-fast broadband speeds, one expert has claimed that the UK is doing well on internet access.

Graham Walker, head of policy at the digital inclusion campaign Race Online 2012, said Britain compares quite favourably to many other digitally advanced nations on access to broadband services.

He said a report by market intelligence company ABI Research shows that the country is just ahead of the US and just behind Sweden in terms of subscriber numbers.

"We are the most sophisticated internet users in Europe, with 58 per cent of our users having bought or sold online," he remarked.

"We have more Facebook users than any country apart from the US, and 50 per cent of all travel is now booked online."

However, he said the next challenge will be to deliver super-fast broadband to users across the country - a task that must not be carried out slowly.

The ABI Research report showed that in the second quarter of 2010, there were just under 449 million fixed broadband subscribers globally.

This was an increase of ten per cent on the same period in 2009.
